GREATER DANBURY CONTINUUM OF CARE AWARDED FUNDS TO HELP FIGHT HOMELESSNESS

The Greater Danbury Continuum of Care has been awarded five grants by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assist people who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless.  Danbury has been awarded a total amount of $924,469.00 under the Fiscal Year 2009-10 Continuum of Care Competition.

The Greater Danbury Continuum of Care is a HUD-required consortium of private, non-profit and public agencies that provide services to people who are homeless or face the threat of homelessness.  The awards are made by HUD based on the needs of the community and the plans developed by the Continuum to address the identified needs.  The Danbury agencies awarded funding include the Association of Religious Communities, the Western Connecticut Mental Health Network-Danbury, and the Housing Authority of the City of Danbury.

Danbury received renewal grants for the following five programs:  Housing Management Information System, Danbury Shelter Plus Care 1; Danbury Shelter Plus Care 2; the Housing Authority/Greater Danbury Mental Health Authority Shelter Plus Care program and the Housing Authority/PILOTS Shelter Plus Care program.  These programs are designed to provide housing assistance coupled with needed supportive services for residents.  The awards represent an increase of $49,668.00 over the amounts awarded to the Greater Danbury Continuum of Care in the prior fiscal year.

The Continuum of Care is a key partner in the implementation of Danbury’s Ten-Year Plan To End Homelessness.  In addition to preparation of the Continuum of Care grant application, the Continuum also implements the yearly “Point In Time” count of people who are homeless; plans the annual Project Homeless Connect Event and addresses other issues involving homelessness in the greater Danbury region.
